Good Value

Date:October 30, 2013
Just received a Barnett Recruit Recurve Crossbow. Didn't bother with the red dot scope, instead, installed a 4X rifle scope. This is a small, light crossbow. I am over six feet tall and have extended the stock to its maximum length. Luckily, the scope has a short eye relief or it would be unusable.
Had the same problem with the bolt holding the nose cone latch being too short. I ground down a lock washer until it would fit.
Sighted in today using the provided arrows and field points. Zeroed at 25 yards, arrow is 3 inches high at 20 yards and 4 inches low at 30 yards.

Good enough skill-builder Xbow

Date:October 25, 2013
Pros:
fun and easy to handle for skill-building
Cons:
18" bolts are perhaps a bit "short".
Also note that Cabelas does not carry 27.5" replacement strings for this package.
Overall, a good buy.

Solid Entry Level Crossbow

Date:September 17, 2013
The crossbow itself is great, plenty of power for turkey or even deer out to maybe 30 yards. The red dot sight that comes with it is cheap. All around nice little crossbow for the money especially if you are a small framed person or youth highly recommed getting the rope cocking device.

Not too shabby

Date:September 12, 2013
I bought this for my 9 year old son to begin hunting with. Assembly was tough because of parts issues. The foot stirrup wasn't in the box and the bolts that come with it are just barely too short to go up through the prod latch (if you use the included lock washer that is recommended). I called Barnett and they were very helpful. They sent me a foot stirrup and a new hardware pack. The bolts were the same though. I called again and the rep from Barnett said if the bolt didn't fit, just go to the hardware store and get longer ones. (NOT EXACTLY HELPFUL THERE)
It was quick and easy to assemble then and it shoots pretty nice. It is VERY consistent up to 25-30 yards for a light recurve, and does well at longer ranges too, although I wouldn't hunt it on longer yardages. The red dot scope is pretty cheaply made and will likely be the first upgrade we make. I see the first review said theirs was a three dot. Ours is not a three dot sight. I don't know what that's all about.
It is borderline for hunting, but if you monitor your shot distance and don't ask it to do more than it can do, you have enough there to ethically take down a whitetail. I will let my son use it for a few seasons but that deer better be close and presenting a clear vitals shot. It does meet the minimum requirements in Pennsylvania, where we live and hunt.
The shot is a bit loud, but with it being a recurve, and very light, that should be expected. The string latch and safety are very nicely put together, giving you confidence when loading.
Overall, even though it may seem there were a lot of negatives in my review, mostly with assembly, I do like this crossbow and would buy it again. It is a good entry level xbow, especially for kids. It even has an adjustable length for the buttstock, so I can use it comfortably now and then too. It is lightweight, accurate and affordable. A good buy.

Barnett Recruit xbow

Date:July 29, 2013
Excellent lil xbow, especially for the money. Bought it for my 8 year old. Xbow sighted in at 20,30,40 yards with the 3 dot scope very easily. It is very light weight, very compact and balanced. Shot several other bows $100-250 more expensive none compared in my opinion. Shoots close to the advertised 300 fbs, and is quieter than alot of others i shot. Great lil setup for kids or even grown ups who don't want to spent a fortune on a decent xbow. Do yourself a favor and shoot it. Bought at Gonzales location, archery staff were helpful more friendly than I expected for a "box store" location.
