STEEL IMAGES Pietta Smith .50-Caliber Carbine-Cavalry Model

Developed in the late 1850s, the Smith Carbines were widely used by Union forces during the Civil War and were a favorite firearm with settlers heading west afterwards. An innovative hinged breech action allowed quick and easy reloads, even by shooters on horseback. This model is a functional replica of the original cavalry model outfitted with a saddle bar ring. It’s compact and fast-handling with a short hardwood stock and adjustable sights. Right hand only. Caliber: .50. Barrel length: 21-5/8" with a 1-in-66" rate of twist. Overall length: 39". Weight: 7.7 lbs.

Smith Carbine

Date:September 9, 2012
.520 round ball and brass case will put you on target. Will need to replace front sight with a taller one. Shoots
low with factory sight. Vary fun carbine to shoot! If the army had the brass case during the war between the states, this would have been the weapon of choice.

Nice Looking, not accurate for competition.

Date:May 16, 2012
The carbine looks very nice. Everything is very tight (perhaps too tight). Out of the box it is not very accurate. I had to have a new lining put in the barrel (more money). Now it shoots great. I would recommend as long as you are aware of the accuracy issues.

They dob't get any nicer!!!

Date:September 25, 2011
I have owned mine for over 15 years. I have what is known as the "Artillary Model". It is exactly the same but without the saddle ring. I have bought 40 brass cartridges and use toilet paper at the bottom which gives me instant ignition and then a charge of FFFg black powder but you can use any legitimate BP or substitute. FFFFg would work also. I really can not get 40 grains to fit so about 35 is the max load. I can't tell you how much fun it is to shoot. What surprises me is the large amount of interest it generates at the range. I have 7 BP rifles. No cheapies and about 9 pistols. But it is this Smith carbine that has gotten me many shooting sessions as swaps with other rifleman at the range. For years I have wanted a Spencer or Burnside carbine and I will get one or both but I can't picture either of them being more enjoyable to shoot. I have become a big fan of Pietta. Quality, fit, finish and details are as good as anyone else. Value is just slightly better. The Smith is an excellent piece.
