Dissatisfied with product, September 10, 2009
By JMB from Sparrows Point, MD

"Ordered first SmartCast unit online. Received first unit on 5 August 2009. Paid extra for express shipping to receive unit before leaving on camping trip. The extra shipping cost was intended to save gas money by not detouring to Cabela’s in route to camp ground to pick-up unit.

After unit received, discovered I had ordered the wrong item. Instead of the wrist model, inadvertently ordered the rod model.

On 8 August 2009, returned first unit to Cabela’s store in Hamburg, PA, on the way to camping trip to exchange for the wrist model.

The second unit was defective. The sensor screen would freeze intermittently during set-up mode and normal operation. Had to repeatedly remove and reinstall the battery so the unit would function.

On 13 August 2009, during return from camping trip returned second unit to Cabela’s store. Exchanged defective second unit (wrist model) for rod model (third unit).

This unit was also defective. The contrast mode did not functioning correctly; the contrast began darkening at setting 2, and then completely darkened the display at setting 7; unable to read display. It should gradually darken beginning at about setting 4 then completely darken at setting 10 but display could be read. In addition to the contrast malfunction, the display would freeze frequently when hitting the time mode. Had to remove and reinstall the battery so the unit would function. Installed second battery with no success; unit still malfunctioned. Also, the second unit may have been previously returned; the instructions had a small tear and the unit appeared to have small wear marks on the edges.

Neat little gadget, May 6, 2009
By AWood from Kremmling, CO

"I bought this for use mainly in calm, fresh water situations. It works very well in this application. It will show you if there are fish present and has an audible alarm so you can take in the scenery rather than constantly watching the display. It is slightly dissappointing that only the display battery is replaceable, but for the money this little sonar is a worthwhile tool."

Battery life may be short, December 30, 2008
By sam4homes from Sacramento, CA

"The battery life of the RSS transducer may be short, the unit worked in my home when it first came and when I first tried to use it the battery was dead. I took it home and put the second battery in and it seemed to work but I have not had a chance to try it yet.

I'm sure that I turned it off at home the first time but from now on I will take out the battery or put a small plastic disc in the unit to positively shut off the unit. I don't need a watch and don't want to waste the battery.

Also I was disapointed to find that the RSS units need to be replaced when the battery wears out. ... how long will they make RSS units. If they stop I'll have to throw away the whole thing.... I'm glad I bought it on sale.

HumminBirds casting sonar, March 25, 2008
By Handicapper from Colorado

"This is a GREAT concept...and a fair tool. Problem is with short RF mast on water device, the pond or lake must be perfectly calm and still to return accurate readings. ANY sizeable wave action interferes with signal. Display is very small, not user friendly. I don't ice fish, but this might be good for reading when fish come under the portal. PLUNKS loudly onto the water. For a "gadget" I would give it a 4 on 10 rating. Better than nothing for shore useage; but for real results get a boat and a transducer !"

rf25 rod mount, July 31, 2007
By Archthebassman from St Claire Shores Mi.

"very good for the money easy to see even in full sun water temp and depth works good only complaint is dose not show size of fish just that one is there. works even at slow troll speeds good product. for shore use or small boat on inland lakes. I have a 10ft port-a-bote and works good for me.

I have one of the original larger units that still

Yes, you need one!, May 19, 2007
By rebelsqk from South Shore MA

"This
is a truly useful item. I got one
last summer an have used it in many situations both fresh and salt water.
An in an out of a boat. You can locate structure find the drop offs an weed
line from shore which is great. You can scan a lot of water from a boat.
Also you can check to see if you can get your boat safely in someplace. Great
for rocky or shallow areas.. This costs less than a prop or worse! I use it in my kayak
as my fish finder. It goes any place. An it works! I caught more fish no
question!
